The Introduction

It just a few short weeks we will be leaving for Switzerland to walk the Via Jacobi, the Camino to Santiago de Compostela just further to the east. We will begin walking in St. Gallen and end in Geneva. Those that have an interest can follow along and consult a map to see our location and progress. As most reading this blog know, we have walked in Spain  and France. Once we complete this section, we will have one more section from Geneva to Le Puy, France and then we will have walked from eastern Switzerland across France and Spain to the Atlantic Ocean over a period of several years.

This walk will be different in the fact that I have had to communicate via email with small family run farms or homes within villages to book lodging before we leave. This has been time consuming as it can be days once an email is sent before I hear back to see if they have two beds for us. Most places only have 2-8 beds. This is not one of our longer walks, it will be over 300 kilometers, but we will have to conquer much bigger mountains...the alps. Once complete we have allowed time to take a train to see the Matterhorn and we will probably do a day or two of hiking there, and then we will return to the Interlaken area (we pass through on our long walk) and take a couple of days to hike in that area. We will also visit the the capitol, Bern, a medieval walled city.

So with new hiking shoes, backpack with essentials, and an open mind we journey to Switzerland to meet new people and experience a new culture and hope to bring back a better understanding of other and ourselves.
